But one man’s round of golf was anything but relaxing when he accidentally set fire to a golf course by misplaying a shot.

The player saw that his shot had landed in the rough. He took a shot to get the ball out of the rough but hit a rock as he did so. This caused a spark and the rough set alight.

The fire spread right across the 12 acres of the golf course in California and 150 firefighters tackled the blaze.

Tiger Woods will prepare for the British Open in St Andrews by training at his home in Florida. Woods normally prepares for the British Open by practicing on Irish Links courses, but following the JP McManus Pro-Am in Limerick he will fly back to Florida so he can spend time with his children. Woods spoke for the first time in Europe following the tournament in Limerick and said things have been put into perspective recently following the death of his father and recent marriage problems. He believes his game is improving more and more after each tournament he plays and he is fully focused on winning the British Open and aims to win his 15th major title at the St Andrews course. Woods has won his last three tournaments at St Andrews which will fill him confidence and could see him produce his best performance this year.

Former Grand National winner Tony McCoy will play alongside Tiger Woods at the J P McManus Pro-Am International Charity Golf Tournament in Adare Manor. McCoy is said to be extremely excited about playing with Woods who will play his first European Tournament since deciding to take a break away from the game following the problems in his personal life. McCoy has taken out insurance to cover himself in case he accidentally hits Tiger Woods, or a member of the attending crowd, with a stray shot. McCoy has spent the last few days on the course in preparation for the tournament and as well as playing alongside Woods, he will play with former jockey Mick Fitzgerald, Jim Brewer, and another professional golfer Steve Webster.

Lee Westwood has fitness concerns ahead of the British Open in St Andrews next week. He was taken to hospital last week following concerns that a blood clot had developed in his right calf. Although this turned out not to be the case, he will undergo a scan within the next few days so the problem can be identified. Westwood managed to limp his way through the French open last week and finished in 18th place, but he has had to pull out of Tuesdays JP McManus Pro-am at Adare Manor in west Ireland, which features Tiger Woods, because of the injury. He pulled out of this week’s Scottish Open two weeks ago so he could plan an early visit to St Andrews but his participation in the British Open remains in doubt.

Tiger Woods has switched to playing with a Nike Golf ball that spins slightly less and has a harder cover than the ball he was previously using. Many believe the change has resulted in Woods hitting longer tee shots than he has all year, which was evident at the AT&T National. Woods was ranked 78th for driving distance before the tournament, but after the first few rounds he lead the tournaments driving distance rankings at just over 328 yards. The change in ball is likely to be part of Woods preparation for the British Open Championship in St Andrews next week where the wind is a major factor, and with the ball spinning less this will give Woods more control around the greens.

Justin Rose won his second PGA Tour Title on American soil yesterday making that two PGA wins out of his last three events. Rose won the AT&T National in Pennsylvania Rose finishing with a one stroke lead. Rose had a five shot lead at the turn of the final round but three putt bogeys and seven straight pars meant he closed with an even-par 70 allowing him to finish with a one shot victory. The lead was reduced by Ryan Moore who finished the final round on 65. The win for Rose earns him a place at the Open Championship at St Andrews which starts on Thursday 15th July.
Tiger Woods’ poor form continued as he finished the event on four over par, which meant it was the first time in eleven years that he didn’t break par over four rounds in a PGA Tour event.

This second course at championship level in the area to be developed by Jose Banus, the first being Las Brisas and was created by Robert Trent Jones. It opened in 1977 and Robert Trent Jones thought Los Naranjos was his most impressive layout.

Holes one to nine are among gentle hilly and wider fairways, while the remaining holes are much more of a challenge, being on more level ground and strewn with stunning orange trees. This is why the course was named Los Naranjos.

The course is a little lengthier than Las Brisas covering 6457 metres from the white tees, the course has tactically positioned bunkers and lakes on the fairways to keep you on your toes.

This is considered to be a very tough courses in the Costa del Sol, with the SSS rating on the white tees is 75.

The club offers such facilities as a short game area, three putting greens, a well stocked pro shop, a driving range with tees at either end and a restaurant.

The course covers 6640 yards, has par 72 and a slope level of 129. It should be noted that the course lengths have been confirmed in yards and from the yellow tees. In addition, the rating for the slope level is off the yellow tees.

Los Flamingos is forty minutes drive from Fuengirola and quarter of an hour from Puerto Banus.

The Estepona is managed with the adage ‘The friendliest course on the Costa’ and when your visit the club you will realise that this is a ‘club away from club’.

The club, created by Luis Lopez Martinez, is located at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja and has an par 72 18 hole course which adheres to the lay of the land. The greens are always immaculate and the fairways are often wide.

Holes one through to nine are some of the lengthiest in Spain, for instance the third hole at par 5 is known as ‘ the ski run’ and is 568 metres in length from the white tees.

The facilities on offer at the Estepona Golf Course are second to none and as a result, the course sees a significant number of golfers on its fairways, especially as it is reasonably priced. The course is situated only 1 kilometre to the west of Arroyo Vaquero.

The course is par 72 rated, covering 6170 yards and has a slope level of 130. It should be noted that the course lengths have been confirmed in yards and from the yellow tees. In addition, the rating for the slope level is off the yellow tees.

The Estepona is only 50 minutes in the car from Fuengirola and twenty minutes from Puerto Banus.

An exciting new course in the Costa del Sol is the Cabopino Golf Club, with a course covering 5170 metres.

The course has thirteen par 4 holes, two par 5 holes and 3 par 3 holes, with four of those holes being hindered slightly by the nearby lakes. The 3rd hole is an unusual par 4, which has a strong decline from the tee all the way to the hole.

Those with large handicaps will find that they need to use all their golf clubs to complete the course, where as those with lower handicaps will need to be a bit more reckless in order to remain within par.

The fairways and greens are all in superb form and buggies are compulsory for this course.

The course is at par 71, has a slope level of 121 and covers 5958 yards. It should be noted that the course lengths have been confirmed in yards and from the yellow tees. In addition, the rating for the slope level is off the yellow tees.

The Cabopino is about a quarter of an hour from Fuengirola and only twenty minutes from Puerto Banus.
